“I’ve had the honor and privilege to serve as your State Senator for the last two years and I would like to continue to serve the people of Androscoggin and Cumberland counties in the Maine Senate. Re-elect me and I will be your independent voice in Augusta.”

State considers tougher animal cruelty law

By ETHAN WILENSKY

Kennebec Journal

AUGUSTA — Lawmakers considered a bill Friday that would make animal cruelty a felony in incidents in which more than 25 animals are put at risk.

Supporters of the bill, including York County's district attorney, said it also would authorize prosecutors to pursue probation in some cruelty cases.

''These are crimes that inflict pain and suffering on large numbers of animals,'' said Sen. Deb Simpson, D-Auburn, sponsor of the bill, which went before the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee.

L.D. 1598 would raise the status of animal cruelty or abuse from a Class D misdemeanor to a Class C felony if more than 25 animals are involved.

A 'great voice'

Letter to the Sun Journal Editor

I support Deb Simpson for Senate District 15.

As a state representative, she has already worked to promote small business growth, to develop alternative energy policies, to improve access to affordable health care, and to protect the victims of domestic violence.

In the Senate, she will continue the fight to protect the interests of Maine families who are struggling to make ends meet in these difficult times.

I have known Deb Simpson for 16 years - she will be a great voice for all of us in

District 15.

She's worked hard

I've lived in Poland for longer than I care to remember. I've been very careful to vote only for the most responsible and most qualified candidates for Legislature.
Rep. Deb Simpson came to my house this summer and I got to know her. We talked about the jobs she's had, about going to public school here, about raising a child as a single mom. I know she's worked hard for everything she's earned.
I've heard what a good job Rep. Simpson did the Legislature - how she chaired a very important committee for four years, how she worked well with both Republicans and Democrats, and how she tackled really difficult issues such as tax reform.
I am very impressed with Deb Simpson as a legislator and as a person, and I will be voting for her for state senate on Nov. 4.

Getting a Grip on Money and Politics, Part I

This short-format web-doc examines campaign finance reform through new eyes, the eyes of Deborah Simpson, a former waitress and single mother who ran for election under Maine's Clean Election statute...and won!

Simpson's inspirational story is juxtaposed with comments of despair and disappointment from on-the-street interviews and masterfully highlighted by Frances Moore Lappé's eloquent and passionate plea for us to embrace this new alternative to the trend of billion-dollar politics.

Based on Lappé's new book, Getting a Grip: Clarity, Creativity and Courage in a World Gone Mad. For more see: http://www.gettingagrip.org/
